Dan Ellis is an associate professor of electrical engineering at Columbia Engineering, where he leads the Laboratory for Recognition and Organization of Speech and Audio (LabROSA), working on extracting information from speech, music, and environmental sound. His many awards and recognitions include: NSF Career Award (2003-2008); Speech Communication Best Paper Awards (2001-2003 and 2005-2007); developer or co-developer of best ranked systems for Audio Chord Recognition (2009), Audio Cover Song Detection (2006), and Audio Artist Identification (2004, 2005) at the MIREX evaluations of the International Conference on Music Information Retrieval; and co-developer of best performing system in the ETSI Aurora-2 Noisy Speech Recognition evaluation at the Eurospeech Special Event in 2001. Ellis received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering and computer science from MIT.
